For Agfa, developing industry-leading inkjet inks for its presses has come easy due to its expertise in color management.
“Agfa’s foundation was built upon color imaging and management with key chemical competence (imaging consumables) as evidenced by our extensive patent portfolio in this area,” said Deborah Hutcheson, director marketing, Agfa North America. “So, it was a logical progression for Agfa to move into the world of inkjet as the industry and technology evolved, especially because of our know-how of ink chemistry, pigment dispersions, ink wetting etc.
We now rank among the top three providers of UV inkjet technology.”
Agfa focuses on UV inkjet ink technology for a number of growing markets, including sign and display, commercial print and packaging, as well as the industrial inkjet market. Hutcheson said this allows the company to take ground-breaking innovations across segments.
“The possibilities for applications are endless, whether by utilizing new options or optimizing existing technologies,” she added. “Agfa’s inkjet printing solutions are designed to respond quickly to high-volume demands with photorealistic print quality, versatility and high productivity. The company also develops and produces all its UV inks in-house.
“Agfa is also known for its UV inks for multiple industrial applications, which Agfa develops and supplies to OEMs of industrial inkjet printing systems. Last but not least, Agfa is also very active in water-based inkjet inks,” Hutcheson noted.
Agfa is part of the Agfa-Gevaert Group, which has a 150+ year history of serving the graphic communications industry. Hutcheson said that its inkjet systems are designed to offer customers extreme productivity and quality with the lowest cost of print manufacturing.
“This is accomplished by fine-tuning all aspects of the print production process, utilizing a matched component approach to ensure the print engine, printheads, inks, software and substrates are balanced to achieve the highest quality and productivity on a consistent basis,” Hutcheson noted. “In addition, Agfa’s thin ink technology utilizes our patented pigmented ink formulations to provide the lowest ink consumption on the market.”
Agfa also puts much emphasis on innovation and service.
“The purchase of a production-based inkjet system is a significant investment, and Agfa’s nationwide, award-winning organization is committed to maximizing the equipment up-time to help increase the return on investment,” said Hutcheson.
Agfa considers innovation an essential business strategy with a continual investment in R&D to push technological boundaries and propel the printing industry forward.
“When customers do business with Agfa, they have priority access to our knowledgeable equipment, workflow, substrate and application specialists to achieve the high quality that their clients demand, and the confidence in knowing that Agfa is a financially strong organization,” Hutcheson said.
The UV inks developed and produced by Agfa form a key element of the performance of the system
“Pigment dispersion technology and chemical design of dispersions and ink are part of the Agfa DNA. The batch-to-batch consistency of the inks and their long shelf-life are also key Agfa ink differentiators,” she added.
Recently, Agfa announced that due to growing volume demands, the company will significantly invest in the expansion of its inkjet ink production capacity. A new manufacturing plant, located at Agfa’s headquarters in Mortsel, Belgium, will focus on water-based inkjet inks. The new facility will enable Agfa to serve its current customers, as well as to be a key supplier of aqueous inkjet inks for a wide range of novel applications.
Its first target is the growing market of printing on décor paper for laminate floorings and furniture panels, where inkjet printing with Agfa’s water-based inks delivers a cost-effective solution. The second target is the promising market of inkjet printing on packaging, especially on corrugated carton.
“Agfa has a unique place in the world of inkjet printing where your imagination is often the only limiting factor,” Hutcheson concluded. “Agfa technology provides print service providers and brands with the ability to continually expand their business reach with unique and innovative applications. Agfa is a specialist inkjet ink and fluids developer with full focus on the growing inkjet ink markets.”
