For a new company, the ability to hit the ground running is a huge advantage. For Garden State Color Solutions (GSCS), a Cinnaminson, NJ-based water-, solvent-based and coatings specialist, the company’s background offers a wealth of experience.
Garden State Color Solutions sprung out of the bankruptcy of Del Val Ink & Color Inc. Del Val Ink & Color has developed a reputation for its quality products, and GSCS acquired the formulas, product lines and assets of Del Val.
Wayne T. Steele Jr., operations/R&D manager for Garden State Color Solutions, was previously Del Val Ink & Color’s R&D manager. He noted that GSCS is upgrading its operations as well as pursuing toll manufacturing opportunities.
“In early 2012, a group of investors very familiar with the industry and the quality of many ink and coating products of the then-bankrupt Del Val Ink and Color, Inc. formed an alliance and started GSCS,” Steele said. “They took over all assets, formulas and product lines that were previously Del Val Ink & Color Inc. Being that most employees worked for Del Val Ink & Color, Inc., we have a vast knowledge of the industry.”
Steele was among the Del Val Ink leaders who joined GSCS. Steele had left Del Val Ink after falling ill, but after recovering, joined GSCS to run its R&D Laboratory and to be the company’s technical representative. He brings with him the formulation experience needed to do flooring and expand the company’s new lines of ink to meet today’s needs in the growing converters market.
“We are upgrading our processes, laboratory and the building,” Steele said. “We now are ready to serve customers in many coating and ink areas such as flooring, pharmaceuticals, specialty products that require confidentiality, and we are also welcoming toll work for a few customers. We have and will deliver product to customers with-in 50 miles from our plant, we offer a Certificate of Analysis and test results to all our customers.”
GSCS’s inks and coatings are ideal for a wide variety of substrates, including paper, film and foil, among others, and the company also specializes in customizing solutions.
“GSCS has been focusing on flooring, both solvent and water,” Steele added. “We are also providing inks and coating to the packaging convertor for food, labels, and containers.”
Toll manufacturing is an interesting opportunity for GSCS. Many ink and coatings manufacturers lack the time, capacity or manpower to handle small orders, and GSCS is built to handle these orders. For example, Steele noted that the company is enjoying a thriving business in doing toll work for automotive coatings.
Steele noted that Garden State Color Solutions is growing at a steady pace. Steele added that GSCS is looking to expand their sales back into the Midwest, and is in the process of finding a new area representative
“To re-enter the marketplace, we need to be patient and continue to hit various customers who used to deal with Del Val, and reassure them that we offer the same quality product that they used to purchase,” he added. “We also are developing a new customer base that has seen our inks, pricing and quality, and have come to us because of substantial savings. With all this said we look into the future with great optimism and expect a very profitable 2015."
