Smurfit Kappa has launched an eco-friendly new type of packaging for motor oil. The new Bag-in-Box product, which protects and conserves the oil, has been specially designed for the automotive industry.
Motor oil has traditionally been stored in plastic bottles which typically use around 85% more material than the new Bag-in-Box solution.
The new design also facilitates easier, more precise pouring and reduces the likelihood of spillage. The reinforced bag inside the box is made of a unique combination of polyethylene and nylon films, which contains the aroma and prevents the oil particles from migrating.
Delivered flat, the palletization and transportation of the products are reduced and optimized. Filled Bag-in-Box delivers a 9% space reduction compared to a plastic pail and around 85% less material compared to equivalent rigid plastic bottles. It is very easy to separate the bag from the box, and totally recyclable.
“The most recent disruptive innovation in motor oil packaging is more than 30 years old,” Thierry Minaud, CEO of the Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box, said. “Now it’s time to move to a more environmentally-friendly packaging, which Bag-in-Box definitely is.”
